Statement made by the San Diego Center in response to the situation of uncertainty in the larger Shambhala Community

As most people are now aware the Shambhala community has been shaken by news of sexual misconduct and allegations of sexual assault involving the spiritual leader of Shambhala, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, and others in the larger Shambhala Sangha. Investigations are now in process, the Sakyong has stepped back from his official position, and mechanisms are in place to listen to and support those who have experienced abuse. It is an uncertain time, a time of transition and re-examination.

During this time we, as members and friends of the San Diego Shambhala community, are heartbroken and struggling with the discord between the Shambhala teachings and the teachers. Looking to the future, we hold the following intentions:

  1. With compassion we stand with those who have been harmed, mostly but not exclusively women. We will not minimize or rationalize the behavior of the Sakyong or other members of the Shambhala Sangha.
  2. We believe that the existing top-down power structures have to be reimagined and we are committed to participating in a restructuring that is more inclusive, diverse and participatory.
  3. We are committed to transparency and accountability now and in the future.
  4. At a local level we will continue to provide support and opportunities to practice and study the Dharma as a way of continuing our journey and affirming community support and connection.
  5. In this uncertain time in the greater Shambhala Sangha the San Diego Center is committed to offering spaces for our community to come together, speak, listen, and bear witness.
