We are looking at reimagining our classes this year.

One primary difference is that we will not be supplying the flowers for classes.

At Dharma Bums we will not have much space for our usual large arrangements. Our initial class is from book 5 lesson 15.  It is ahead of many of you but I (Philip Truitt) am very excited to play with you with this lesson. You are encouraged in this lesson to really look at your surroundings, work with small arrangements and bring your own flowers. We will not be providing flowers. I intend to bring a number of treasures from my garden and my walks around the neighborhood that I want to use for my arrangements. (I intend to share).

You will want to bring five or six small vases or other containers (I am contemplating using a spray painted tomato paste can).   You’ll also need to bring a mat or flat tray (Dai) that harmonizes with your vases.  While you are out and about this month please also keep an eye out for baskets you might like to use in the upcoming classes.   This is a great class to start of the autumnal season.  I am excited to see you all soon.

Kalapa Ikebana was founded by Chogyam Trungpa  as a contemplative practice of expressing gentleness and elegance through the art of flower arrangement. It is a quiet practice of mindfulness allowing the student to experience harmony with nature and one’s perception. The process of arranging flowers and other materials allows the free expression of our true nature.

Donna has taught Kalapa Ikebana (KI) at the center since 2014 as well as practicums at the Naropa University and beginning students at KI and had been active on the KI Steering Committee for many years. She has exhibited in SDMA Art Alive shows, International Ikebana shows and Sogetsu Ikebana shows.

If you can offer the full program tuition or a donation, that is what we request. If it is possible for you to offer more than the stated amount, or make a generous donation, please do so as it allows us to make these programs available to those who may not be able to pay the full amount, or contribute necessary materials for these programs.  If, after contemplating this policy, you feel the tuition presents an obstacle please contact the program coordinator (contact person) by email.  Put Kalapa Ikebana in the subject line and we will work with you to set a different amount.
